The DEG has a full agenda covering a variety of initiatives, as outlined below:
Committees
DEG Committees meet regularly to explore different issues that affect the market.
Committee Chairs report on these findings and make recommendations to the group. The DEG has four Committees - Technology, Content, Operations and Communications. Details of the Committees are available by contacting the DEG offices. All members may volunteer to serve on Committees each year.
Consumer Outreach and Education
The DEG has produced a variety of collateral materials, including the HDTV Guide, a consumer brochure on high definition television which includes all the basics of HDTV including proper set up guidelines. The second piece, Enhancing the High Definition Experience, highlights the offerings of high definition and helps consumers further enjoy their HDTVs. The third piece in the series will focus on the collaborative relationship between physical and digital media.
DEG Quarterly Newsletter
The group publishes a quarterly newsletter that includes recent sales figures for DVD hardware, software and high definition entertainment, guest editorials, in-depth analysis of new applications, industry related calendar listings, among other items of interest to the home entertainment community. The DEG Quarterly is sent complimentary to all members and is available via subscription to non-members.
DEG Headlines
Three times a week, the DEG compiles news clips from local and national, consumer, business and trade media. The DEG Headlines are distributed to members via email, providing them with a comprehensive, yet concise snapshot of industry-related news.
ESCA (Entertainment Supply Chain Academy)
The DEG is a founding sponsor of ESCA. Through the group’s participation, members are invited to participate in dialogue, research and activities related to improving the physical and digital supply chain. Members are invited to participate in ESCA’s conferences in the U.S. and Europe at discounted rates.
High Definition Technologies
The DEG embraces high definition technologies by promoting and serving as a clearinghouse of information. Our materials are designed to provide accurate information so that consumers enjoy the optimal HD experience. The DEG also promotes the core benefits of HD packaged media by disseminating information provided by the format development setting standards groups. These materials are prepared in a non-competitive and unbiased manner.
Industry Calendar
The DEG posts a year-long calendar tracking all the key industry events, including meeting details and a link for more information. Members may access this calendar anytime on the DEG Web site.
Industry Sales Reporting
The group tracks and reports on DVD hardware and software, and HD media sales. These numbers are released to the media and reported on by national news organizations and trade groups.
Issues Orientation
The group provides a forum to explore key issues affecting the industry. Members look closely at new applications, features and development for digital entertainment. The DEG meets regularly to share different viewpoints of coming applications.
Media Relations
The DEG serves as the industry’s voice on issues surrounding DVD and high definition entertainment. The group maintains regular contact with entertainment, trade and consumer publications and news outlets, generating a steady stream of news coverage about the home entertainment industry. Media materials are updated to include information regarding emerging formats as they develop. The group refers to its members as experts for news stories.
Meetings and Workshops
The DEG holds a number of meetings each year to allow its members an opportunity to learn the latest developments in the industry. The DEG meets each quarter to discuss key industry issues; learn from guest speakers; share member announcements and engage in open dialogue with each other. Half-day workshops that highlight specific issues are held on relevant topics such as copy protection, digital downloading, business models for emerging technologies, set-top boxes and sound reproduction. Copies of all presentations made at DEG events are available to members on the DEG Web site.
Research
The DEG commissions research to address members’ requests and look at relevant issues in the industry. Past studies looked at the use of high definition in the home, consumer usage and attitudes for DVR, DVD burning and VOD and online content. Recently, the DEG sponsored an industry-wide study examining the last 100 feet of the entertainment supply chain.
Retail Advisory Board
The DEG has a Retail Advisory Board (RAB) representing independent, mass merchants, clubs, rentailers and online retailers. Members of the RAB attend DEG meetings providing input and engaging in candid dialogue. Members of the RAB are invited to join based on recommendations made by the Communications Committee.
Retail Summit
In cooperation with the Boards of EMA and NARM, the DEG hosts an annual Retail Summit. Last year’s Summit included detailed presentations on anti-piracy and high definition technologies. From there, attendees met in breakout sessions to further discuss these relevant issues and come up with solutions that the DEG could undertake.
