DEG Localization Committee Appoints New Chairs, Publishes Creative Dubbing White Paper

December 3, 2024 | DEG’s Localization Committee within the Advanced Content Delivery Alliance has new Co-Chairs for 2025: Silviu Epure, SVP, Content Globalization, Blu Digital Group (l.), and Andrea Riehle, Senior Director, Localization, NBCUniversal (r.). Epure and Riehle have been localization sub-committee leaders and among the authors of several white papers and resource documents that the committee has published over the past year. Development of the committee’s groundbreaking Non-Binary Pronoun and Conjugation Reference Guide was led by Riehle, and Epure leads the Localization Workflow subcommittee, which later this month will publish the white paper “Content Globalization 101.” Under their leadership, the Localization Committee will continue to push forward its mission of furthering quality in the globalization of content.

DEG thanks outgoing chairs Josh Pine, CRO, XL8, and Kacy Boccumini for their incredible leadership over the last two years.

The new white paper “How to Achieve Quality in Creative Dubbing,” is now available from the Localization Committee’s Creative Workstream working group. This paper focuses on the creative choices that increase the quality of viewing for optimal consumer experience, as well as specific workflow best practices for the dubbing process.

Consumer research findings emphasize the critical need for excellence in dubbing to engage an increasingly diverse and global audience, ensuring that content resonates across linguistic and cultural boundaries. This paper introduces six quality standards for dubbing and outlines best practice considerations in casting, translation accuracy, cultural adaptation, recording, and mixing. Finally, it addresses logistical challenges including budgeting, talent sourcing, and legal requirements.

DEG appreciates the contributions of authors Vanessa Lecomte, BBC Studios; Blake Dempsy, Iyuno; Riehle; Craig Seidel, Pixelogic; and Duncan Wain, Zoo Digital.
