January 5, 2022 | DEG welcomes Omdia as a new member. Omdia is a world-class market intelligence research and consultancy company enabling clients to navigate the media, telecommunications, consumer electronics, and technology marketplaces. Its Media & Entertainment team offers unparalleled global coverage of traditional media and emerging forms of digital entertainment, which is relied upon by leading companies to understand the quickly evolving marketplace.
DEG connected with Peter Rowan, the company’s Head of Business Development, Media & Entertainment, to discuss Omdia’s previous work delivering insights for technology and entertainment sectors, and upcoming trends in TV and online video.
DEG: Omdia may be a new name to DEG members, but the company does have a long track record of delivery insights for the technology, media & entertainment sectors. Will you explain?
PR: Omdia’s Media and Entertainment practice can trace its roots to Screen Digest, which started over 50 years ago. In 2020, Ovum, IHS Markit Technology, Tractica and Heavy Reading merged under Informa, and rebranded as Omdia. Today, Omdia provides syndicated research and bespoke consulting for major studios and growing media, gaming, and technology companies. We cover the whole range of the media landscape, including online streaming, television, consumer devices, consumer studies, cinema, gaming, music, and video delivery technologies. Omdia also covers emerging technology areas that are increasingly intersecting with media, such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence, internet-of-things, smart home, cybersecurity, and enterprise cloud. The Media and Entertainment practice specifically delivers insights through strategic reports, detailed datasets, industry forecasts and direct analyst engagements to support clients.
DEG: What are the most important trends in TV and online video that Omdia will be covering in 2022?
PR: Next year will be an exciting and pivotal moment for the media and entertainment industry as pandemic-influenced consumer behavior transitions to a “new normal.” We’ve identified streaming aggregation, the expanding role of connected devices, the evolving direct-to-consumer models, and the growing importance of emerging markets as some of the key trends to watch.
For example, who will be the ultimate aggregators of online platforms and what is the role of legacy telco operators? Omdia plans to evaluate the role and impact of these aggregators for both streaming services and targeted channels. Additionally, we will analyze connected device platforms as gatekeepers and identify who will rise to prominence.
Omdia also plans to explore the adoption of hybrid direct-to-consumer business models, for example SVOD/AVOD, and develop benchmarks to compare the growth of these services. We will investigate where consumers are subscribing and the corresponding downstream revenue effect.
As global expansion drives many companies’ strategies, Omdia will assess regional device ownership, evaluate entertainment consumption trends, and quantify international opportunities, including emerging mobile-first markets.
DEG: People in the DEG community may know you from your time working at Disney or Fox. How does your previous studio experience inform your work at Omdia?
PR: As a studio executive in strategic planning, finance, and analytics roles, I developed a comprehensive understanding of media business fundamentals and strategies – including learning first-hand how important information and insights are to pursuing opportunities and making intelligent decisions. Currently, I help a variety of media, gaming, and technology companies attain actionable insights and develop custom solutions to successfully navigate the fast-evolving digital marketplace.
