March 31, 2025 | Shout! Studios: In 2024, Shout! Studios’ Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) Turkey Day Marathon celebrated 11 years of streaming – reflecting significant growth in revenue, audience reach, and cultural relevance since its digital debut in 2013.
2024’s Mystery Science Theater 3000 Turkey Day Potluck of the Stars Marathon added a dash of star power to the beloved tradition, featuring celebrity fans like Mark Hamill, who shared their favorite episodes. Hosted by Jonah Ray, it treated viewers to curated episodes, including the highly anticipated return of fan-favorite Final Sacrifice.
The marathon tallied a 41 percent increase in total hours viewed compared to 2023. Press and influencer outreach further amplified performance, bringing six million social impressions — a 16 percent year-over-year increase.
Over the past decade, Shout! Studios has revitalized the Mystery Science Theater 3000 franchise, transforming its cult following into a thriving online community. In creating YouTube and Twitch channels with livestreaming and live chat features, a FAST channel, new interstitial content, unique partner platform promotions, social media, giveaways, crowdfunding, and more, Shout! Studios has successfully attracted fresh audiences while reactivating longtime fans.
MST3K has been a blueprint for leveraging digital strategies to revitalize a beloved brand and Shout! Studios is applying the same approach to other franchises like ALF and Trailer Park Boys.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 first premiered in 1988, running for ten seasons on cable television. The show starred creator Joel Hodgson as a janitor trapped on the Earth-orbiting Satellite of Love, forced to watch a never-ending stream of B-movies alongside his robot companions Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo. After becoming Comedy Central’s flagship program in its second season, MST3K introduced its first Turkey Day Marathon in 1991, inspired by the 1980 book The Golden Turkey Awards.
For years, a devoted fanbase of “MSTies” watched the annual Turkey Day broadcasts until the final original season of MST3K aired on The Sci-Fi Channel in 1999.

The franchise was revived in 2013 when the first digital Turkey Day marathon, exclusively streamed on YouTube, revived the fanbase with a chance to celebrate and interact. Hodgson produced special segments for the event, generating significant buzz, and the live response was overwhelmingly positive. Fans generated 33,429 total comments (nearly one per second), driving the programming to the No. 2 position on Twitter.
The use of interactive chat features marked a pivotal shift for MST3K, expanding its reach beyond traditional cable and DVD formats and revealing considerable engagement potential. Chat has been one of the most beneficial evolutions for the MST3K franchise to-date.

By 2014, comments on the Turkey Day YouTube livestream more than doubled to 71,262, and in 2016, the marathon became the top livestream on YouTube for the day. This surge demonstrated the profound impact digital platforms had on expanding MST3K’s audience in just a few years.
Shout! Studios capitalized on the rise of FAST by launching MST3K on Pluto TV in 2014. Over the next decade, the franchise expanded its presence to platforms like Freevee, Roku, and Samsung TV+, obtaining a monthly reach of over one million viewers across 10+ platforms.

Following this FAST success, Shout! Studios also ventured into interactive streaming platforms like Twitch and Facebook. Recognizing another opportunity to capture a broader MST3K audience with live chat and community-driven content, the 2017 Turkey Day Marathon saw almost 19,000 Twitch chats and 50,000 total Facebook engagements.
Twitch proved particularly lucrative for the franchise, offering multiple revenue streams through subscriptions, donations, sponsorships, and more. This has been a significant advantage as the streaming landscape changes.
Community has been central to Mystery Science Theater 3000’s ongoing digital success. Dedicated moderators, exclusive content, and direct fan interactions have transformed platforms like Twitch into vibrant hubs, and moderator-run giveaways, talent appearances in chat, and homepage promotional placements have proven to be highly effective publicity tools for the show.
MST3K has secured its status as Shout! Studios’ top-performing brand across all platforms, with the ongoing involvement of creator Hodgson in the production of original content setting it apart in a competitive landscape.

Crowdfunding has also played a significant role in MST3K’s digital renaissance. In 2015, the #BringBackMST3K Kickstarter raised over $6 million to fund 14 new episodes, while the 2021 #MakeMoreMST3K campaign added another $6 million to produce season 13 and launch the Gizmoplex — a proprietary platform for direct-to-consumer content. These efforts have solidified MST3K’s ability to sustain itself independently while continuing to expand its library.
By 2022, with three new seasons added to the MST3K library, Turkey Day saw a significant boost, including a 19 percent increase in social engagement and a 94 percent surge in viewership.
Looking ahead, Shout! Studios is looking to create new seasons, spin-off series, a possible live show, and steady stream of new and topical content revealing an exciting future for the cult classic.
