The Evolving D2C Landscape – See the Deck from Hub Entertainment Research’s Jon Giegengack

July 16, 2020 | Even by TV industry standards, 2020 has been disruptive, Hub Entertainment Research Founder & Principal Jon Giegengack told attendees at Thursday’s DEG Expo | The Evolving D2C Landscape. Factors at work include not only the global COVID-19 pandemic, but also the introduction of new subscription streaming providers and free, ad-supported TV platforms; the evolution of smart TVs to make it easy for consumers to manage multiple providers; and the continued decline of traditional pay TV bundles.

In his Expo presentaion, Giegengack focused on two questions: how consumers want to pay for content (money vs. time), and what makes one provider more valuable than others. Hub’s research shows that the number of program sources per user in 2020 has grown more than 50 percent since 2018, to include 4.8 sources spread across streaming and traditional services. Most people feel their TV services are at least a good value, Hub found, but that does vary by how much people pay. Viewers who use the most services are generally the most satisfied, at least until their monthly bill cracks the $100 threshold.
